October 2026 — The Thonghathai Farmer Academy (Cha-am Agricultural Learning Center) recently teamed up with local farming networks to combat pest outbreaks and restore struggling coconut trees. As part of this hands-on initiative, farmers released earwigs; beneficial predatory insects provided by the Cha-am District Agricultural Extension Office, directly into their fields for natural biological pest control.
This eco-friendly approach cuts down on costly chemical pesticides while restoring ecological balance to the orchards, ensuring safer produce for both growers and consumers in the long run.
Did You Know? Why Earwigs Are a Farmer’s Best Friend
Efficient Natural Hunters Earwigs are nocturnal predators that feed on destructive pests like caterpillars, borers, aphids, and pest eggs, keeping populations in check naturally.
Crop-Safe Despite their intimidating appearance, beneficial earwigs primarily target other insects rather than damaging your plants.
Easy to Host You can encourage earwigs to stay in your orchard by providing simple shelters, such as piles of straw, wood debris, or overturned flowerpots near tree bases.
Core Practices
Regular Pruning Remove dead fronds and dry leaf bases where pests typically breed, keeping the canopy well-ventilated and sunlit.
Biological Pest Control Embrace beneficial insects like earwigs and parasitic wasps to establish a self-regulating ecosystem.
Soil Enrichment Apply organic compost, manure, or mulch around the base of the trees to retain moisture and boost soil microbiology, strengthening trees against diseases and pests.
